Zidansek Holds Off Bronzetti

Top seed Tamara Zidansek held off a gutsy Lucia Bronzetti of Italy in the quarterfinals of the Lausanne Open on Friday to move into the semifinals.

The Slovenian, who caught the attention of the world with her run to the semifinals at Roland Garros this year, needed two hours and 19 minutes to see off the World No. 241, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Zidansek converted all six break point opportunities that she had in the match and saved four of nine that she faced on her serve.

The win improved the 23-year-old to 24-13 in 2021, including qualifiers. Apart from that run to the semifinals at the French Open, she also reached the final in Bogota but failed to win a maiden title after falling to Maria Camila Osorio Serrano.

In 2019, she had reached the final in Nuremberg but had missed out on the title after falling to Yulia Putintseva.

Zidansek had begun the tournament with a tough three-set win over Russia’s Marina Melnikova, fighting back from a set down to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Slovenian had an easy second round outing, defeating Luxembourg’s Mandy Minella 6-2, 7-5, before having to fight it out against Bronzetti on Friday.

Zanevska Into her First Semifinal

Facing Zidansek will be Belgium’s Maryna Zanevska, who continued her stunning run in the tournament with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Russia’s Natalia Vikhlyantseva on Friday to reach the first WTA semifinal of her career.

The 27-year-old, ranked 193rd in the world, saved three of seven break points and converted six of nine to win the quarterfinal match in an hour and 37 minutes.

Zanevska had begun her Lausanne challenge with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win over third seed Swiss Jil Teichman. She took out another Swiss player in the second round, defeating Stefanie Voegele 7-5, 6-3.

Zanevska, whose only notable performance on the tour this year was a second round appearance as a qualifier in Strasbourg, has mostly featured at the ITF level, winning a title and finishing runner-up on one occasion. Overall, she has 18 titles and 12 runner-up finishes at the ITF level.

Zidansek v Zanevska Prediction and Tip

Zanevska has looked in great touch in Lausanne and knowing that Zidansek has found the going difficult against lower ranked opponents in the tournament, she will sense an opportunity. But given the Slovenian’s form and consistency this season, she will be a favourite to advance to a third career final.
