Schmiedlova Hoping for a Positive Run in Gdynia

26-year-old Anna Karolina Schmiedlova is hoping to find some sort of reprieve in the Poland Open. Currently ranked World No. 123 – far off from her peak of No. 26 – the Slovakian player has struggled a lot with her form over the last couple of years.

With her last WTA final coming back in January 2019, the dearth of title/penultimate-round runs has knocked Schmiedlova out of the top 100.

She did show some promise at the start of the year. A second-round feat in the Australian Open, followed by back to back quarterfinal appearances in Guadalajara and Monterrey – there were signs that Schmiedlova would stage a resurgence soon. However, it all changed at the onset of clay swing.

Since then, the best she has done is reaching the second round in WTA Parma and the Hungarian Grand Prix before losing to Mihaela Buzarnescu and Dalma Galfi respectively.

Here in Gdynia, Schmiedlova beat Anna Blinkova 6-3, 6-3 in the opener.

Bondar Wins her First WTA Match of the Year

24-year-old Anna Bondar will be pleased with her opening-round 7-5, 6-3 win against Valeriia Olianovskaia. After all, that marks her first WTA win of the season.

Up until now, she had focussed mainly on the ITF circuit with a side order of WTA tournaments. In the former, she found quite a bit of success – a runner-up trophy and a few deep runs. On the WTA side of things, her sole highlight includes reaching the main draw in WTA Abu Dhabi as a qualifier.

The current World No. 231 last played in Budapest where Bondar fell in the qualifiers. However, in the Nordea Challengers, she was a quarterfinalist where, coincidentally, she was beaten by Buzarnescu.

Schmiedlova v Bondar Prediction and Tip

Schmiedlova will start as the favourite on account of her superior overall pedigree. That said, Bondar is a capable player with a proven record on the ITF doubles circuit. While she lacks upper-tier experience, she has the skills needed to make things difficult for her opponent.
