Jordan Thompson v Sebastian Ofner Head to Head
This will be a first meeting between the two.
Thompson Knocks Out Karlovic
Back on hard court for the first time since the Miami Open, Jordan Thompson got off to a winning start in Los Cabos, defeating the big-serving Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 7-5 in the first round.
Having climbed eight places in the ranking to No. 63 this week, following a solid grass court season, Thompson will now be eyeing a fourth quarterfinal berth this season. He was a semifinalist in Newport last week, but failed to make a second career final after going down to Jenson Brooksby. He was also a quarterfinalist in Mallorca last month.
Against Karlovic, Thompson got the only break of the first set, and while the two exchanged a couple of early breaks in the second, the Australian edged ahead with the vital break at 5-5 and then served out the match for a straight sets win.
Karlovic did have an opportunity to break in the last game, but Thompson was up to it, saving the break point before closing out the contest in an hour and 34 minutes.
The Australian was 4-4 in the early season matches on hard courts, thanks to a quarterfinal finish at Melbourne-1 and a second round appearance in Miami.
Ofner Through After Rodionov Retirement
Austria’s Sebastian Ofner moved into the second round after his opponent Jurij Rodionov retired midway in the second set. Ofner had taken the first set 6-3 and was leading the second 3-1 when his compatriot and doubled partner Rodionov decided to pull out of the contest.
In the battle of between the two Austrians, Ofner looked the better player, saving both the break points and that he faced and converting three of 11 breaking opportunities.
The win improved the 25-year-old to 2-2 this year.
The World No. 165 had earlier qualified for tournaments in Queen’s and Newport and had beaten Yasutaka Ushiyama in Newport for his only main draw win of the season.
Ofner has featured in one Challenger final this year, finishing runner-up in Nur Sultan-2.
Thompson v Ofner Prediction and Tip
Thompson has been in good form lately, and will hope to keep it going in the second round against Ofner. Expect the Australian to advance to the quarterfinal.
