Jennifer Brady v Camila Giorgi Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between the two players in a professional setting.
Brady in Peak Form
26-year-old Jennifer Brady is making her Olympics debut as the top-seeded American in the women’s field. Representing the hopes of a medal in tennis for the USA, Brady is in for a tough fight with the likes of Jelena Ostapenko, Karolina Pliskova, and Maria Sakkari lingering in her bracket.
That said, the current world number 15 has the goods to deliver, as proven by her runner-up feat in the Australian Open. That was only her second singles final – her first one at a Grand Slam where she ultimately lost to Naomi Osaka.
Brady has shown a lot of promise on the hard courts which is another reason why she has the calibre for a deep run in Tokyo. She won the WTA Lexington last year and followed it with a semifinal appearance in the US Open (beating Angelique Kerber and Yulia Putintseva along the way).
Admittedly, her form wasn’t this impressive in the clay swing with Brady’s best showing coming in the French Open and Madrid Open where she reached round three. She sat out the grass season with the Tokyo Games marking her first professional event since the Paris slam.
Giorgi in for a Battle
Camila Giorgi arrived in Tokyo with a win-loss tally of 14-11. In her last couple of tournaments – Wimbledon and Ladies Open Lausanne, the Italian lost in the second round to Karolina Muchova and Zarina Diyas respectively.
Such has been the season for the 29-year-old player, marked mainly by a litany of early-round exits. Giorgi is seeking her first singles title since 2018 while she hasn’t reached a final since the 2019 Bronx Open.
She has come close to it a couple of times – a quarterfinal feat in WTA Lyon and more impressively, the semifinal run the Eastbourne International where she started as a qualifier.
Giorgi dispatched the likes of Karolina Pliskova and Aryna Sabalenka to deliver one of her best WTA performances. However, she lost in the semis to Anett Kontaveit after withdrawing in the first set.
Brady v Giorgi Prediction and Tip
Brady will start here as the favourite and is unlikely to be beaten by the out of form Giorgi.
