Dayana Yastremska v Leylah Fernandez Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between the 21-year-old Yastremska and the 18-year-old Fernandez.

Yastremska Back on Hard Courts After 8 Months

Banned in January by the ITF, Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska made a solid comeback earlier this month in Hamburg, reaching the semifinals in what was her first tournament of the season. Now she heads to Tokyo, having not played on hard courts since her first round exit from Linz in November 2020.

It’s difficult to know the sort of form she would bring to the Olympics, but she didn’t give a feeling of being away for too long on the clay courts of Hamburg, where she defeated Magdalena Frech in the second round and Sara Errani in the quarterfinal before being stunned by eventual champion Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the semifinal.

The ITF had suspended Yastremska after she tested positive for a substance prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Her provisional suspension, however, was lifted last month after an independent tribunal under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme said there was no fault or negligence on her part.

The aggressive right-hander is a three-time champion on tour, with two of those titles coming on hard courts and one on clay. She also made it to the final in Adelaide last year.

If she were to win her first round match she could be facing the in-form Barbora Krejcikova in the next round.

Fernandez Making Waves at 18

She is just 18, but Leylah Fernandez has already made an impact on the tour. Reaching two tour-level finals as a teenager is no mean feat and to top that the Canadian claimed her maiden WTA title earlier this year.

The 5’6″ lefty packs quite a punch on hard courts, she was a runner-up at the Mexican Open last year, finishing runner-up to Heather Watson and won the title in Monterrey this year by defeating Viktorija Golubic in the final.

Not that she has struggled on other surfaces, as she made it to the third round of the French Open last year, and also won her first round match this year, but the World No. 72 hasn’t quite had the same impact that she has had on hard courts. And she will be looking to make the most of the opportunity in Tokyo.

Yastremska v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

Expect a feisty battle between the two gritty youngsters looking to make an impact in their first Olympics. Seems the match will need a decider to separate the two.
