Denis Kudla v Christopher O’Connell Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in a Challenger event in Fairfield, USA in 2017, O’Connell winning on that occasion.

Previous Atlanta Semi-Finalist Kudla

Kudla reached his maiden ATP  semi-final in Atalanta in 2015, but his other four previous visits have all ended in early defeats.

The American enjoyed a good grass court season, finishing as a runner-up in the Nottingham Challenger event and then reaching the quarter-finals in the follow-up tournament.

He then qualified for Wimbledon and reached the third round before his run was ended by the champion and world number one Novak Djokovic.

Back home in Newport, he reached the second round, but was then surprised by compatriot Jenson Brooksby, losing in three sets.

And last week in Mexico, he again got to the second round in Los Cabos before losing to another American Ernesto Escobedo.

O’Connell Coming off the Qualifiers

O’Connell had to come through two rounds of qualifying to make the main draw, first beating Yosuke Watanuki of Japan in  straight sets. He was then a break-up on Sebastian Ofner of Austria in the first set of their match when Ofner was forced to retire through injury.

He is a regular on the junior tours where he has appeared in 21 finals, winning eleven of them, although his last victory was at that tournament in Fairfield where he beat Kudla.

O’Connell has appeared in all three Grand Slams this year, beginning with the Australian Open where, having been given a wildcard, he achieved a shock first round victory over Jan-Lennard Struff before losing to Radu Albot in the second round.

He was given another wildcard to the French Open, where he lost to the American Tommy Paul in the first round, and then qualified for the Wimbledon main draw for the first time in his career.

However, he then lost to Gael Monfils in a five set battle.

Since then, he tried, and failed, to qualify for the Hamburg Open.

Kudla v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

Kudla will start the marginal favourite as the higher ranked player, but he will need to be wary of O’Connell who won their only previous meeting.
