Jannik Sinner v Christopher O’Connell Head to Head

Sinner and O’Connell have never played each other before. While Sinner is known to go hard at his opponents with his aggressive baseline game, the fact that he won’t have any prior knowledge of O’Connell’s will make for an absorbing contest.

Sinner Keen to Land Year’s First Title

Making his first appearance on Tour since his opening-round loss to Hungarian Marton Fucsovics at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, Sinner will open his Atlanta campaign in the last-16.

Barring a runner-up finish at the prestigious Miami Open and pushing 13-time Roland-Garros champion Rafael Nadal in the first round of this year’s Italian Open, the 19-year-old hasn’t had the most fruitful run across surfaces this year.

He did reach the fourth round at this year’s French Open but fell to a straight-set defeat to Nadal again, in a repeat of the 2020 outcome.

Having come a cropper at all three Grand Slams so far, Sinner will be keen to get his act together and hit top form on concrete ahead of the US Open.

Since lifting his maiden Tour title in Sofia last year, the Italian has come of age in the men’s game and has risen to within touching distance of the Top-20 in singles.

Though he faces a qualifier in his Atlanta opener, Sinner will be determined to reinforce his title aspirations with a clinical and comfortable win.

O’Connell Beats Kudla in Second Round

Having made the main draw courtesy of a walkover by his opponent in the second qualifier, 27-year-old O’Connell ran up against American Denis Kudla in the opening round.

Currently 132nd in singles, O’Connell dropped the opening set against Kudla but just when it seemed like the American was poised to run away with it, the Australian mounted a spirited fightback.

Getting back at his opponent, O’Connell broke the American and held his serve to win the second set 6-3 and take the match into a decider. With the momentum with him, the Aussie broke Kudla again and wrapped up the contest in three sets.

O’Connell cleared the qualifiers and broke into the main draw at this year’s Wimbledon Championships but couldn’t get past veteran Frenchman Gael Monfils in the first round.

Sinner v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

Sinner, by way of his superior ranking and skill, will start as a clear favorite in this last-16 clash. But O’Connell will go into the match with zero expectations and pressure and will throw everything at the Italian in the hope of an upset.

While Sinner is expected to sail through, it could also be a day for the underdog to shine.
