However, the third set turned out to be a breeze for the Russian as, cashing in on a break of serve, Samsonova closed out a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win.
The American would be keen to rise from her Wimbledon defeat and find her bearings on the hard court ahead of the all-important US Open.
A seasoned campaigner in the women’s circuit, Stephens has been an underachiever by most estimates, especially in Grand Slam tournaments, and the Flushing Meadows would give her opportunity to set the record straight.

McNally Failed to Qualify for Wimbledon
Currently ranked 117th in singles, McNally failed to clear the qualifiers and make the main women’s draw at the Wimbledon Championships this year.
She did manage to qualify for the main draw at the Birmingham Classic but fell to a straight-set defeat to Tunisian Ons Jabeur.
The American hasn’t had any matches under her belt since the disappointment at All England and needs to start well at San Jose to get the confidence flowing into her system again.
However, in Stephens, she faces a tough opponent who is coming off a decent finish at All England.

Going by form and recent run of results, Stephens should start as favorite in the San Jose opener against McNally. However, the 19-year-old is quite capable of springing a surprise on her experienced opponent on her day.
