Yulia Putintseva v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

They are 1-1 on the tour, having played twice last year. They also met at a qualifying round in 2015, which the Kazakh won.

Putintseva Advances With Ease

She had not beaten Donna Vekic in their first four meetings, now she is two from two from their last two encounters.

Putting up a dominant performance, Putintseva needed just an hour and 37 minutes to beat the Croatian 7-5, 6-3 in the first round in San Jose on Tuesday.

The first set was a close affair with both getting a break each in the first 10 games. The Kazakh broke for a second time in the 11th and from there on, it was just one-way traffic. The second set was far more easier for Putintseva, who saved the only break point that she faced during the set, while breaking her opponent’s serve twice.

Ranked 35th in the world, the 26-year-old added to her 2019 Nurnberg title this year by clinching the crown in Budapest last month. The three-time major quarterfinalist, however, had a tough time in the heat of Tokyo, having to retire mid-way against Nadia Podoroska in the first round.

Tomljanovic Saves Two Match Points to Progress

It was one of the highly anticipated matches of the first round and it lived up to its billing.

In the past Tomljanovic has spoken about how she has been working on the mental aspect of her game and all that seems to be coming together for the Australian. Tuesday’s match was a test of her mental strength and she was equal to the task.

Outplayed in the first set by Amanda Anisimova, the Australian refused to give up, fighting back in the second by saving a match point and forcing the decider. She had her back to the wall once again in the third, facing a second match point on her serve at 4-5, but she denied Anisimova yet again.

Once level at 5-5, the Aussie broke the American in the next and the held on to her serve to win the fourth consecutive game of the set for a 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory.

Putintseva v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip

Expect an intriguing contest between two players who have been in the spotlight over the last few weeks. Last year they met twice on the tour, with both winning once in straight sets.

Two sets may not be enough this time around.
