In-form Collins Extends Streak

July was brilliant for Danielle Collins and August has kicked off in great style too, as the 27-year-old American eased into the second round in San Jose on Tuesday.

Converting all four of her break point opportunities in the match, Collins beat compatriot Shelby Rogers 6-4, 6-3 to win the first round contest in an hour and 25 minutes.

Collins won 81.3% first serve points and saved five of the seven break points that she faced.  She also made nine double faults in the match – an area she will need to improve on come the next round.

A quarterfinalist in Hamburg and a semifinalist in Budapest, Collins capped off the wonderful month of July with her first career title in Palermo. Playing as the top seed, Collins didn’t drop a set the entire week, going all the way to the title. Following the win over Rogers, the World No. 36 is now on a six-match winning streak.

Stephens Wins on Return

She hadn’t played since losing in the third round of Wimbledon to Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova, and it reflected in her game as she got off to a sluggish start in the first round against compatriot Catherine McNally. Down 0-4 in the first set, Stephens raised her level and won six in a row to clinch the first set.

With momentum on her side, the former World No. 3 breezed past her opponent in the second set to win the one-hour-and-30-minute contest 6-4, 6-2.

Stephens broke McNally thrice in each set, while saving five of eight break points that she faced.

Having endured an extended period of poor form, the 2017 U.S. Open champion has been resurgent over the last four months, stringing consecutive wins together and making deep runs.

Her best was a semifinal appearance in Parma. The 28-year-old has a winning record on all surfaces but has a particular liking for hard courts, where she has played seven of her nine career finals, winning five of them.

Collins v Stephens Prediction and Tip

Collins has the momentum with her, while Stephens played her first match in almost a month on Tuesday. So the seventh seed may have a slight advantage, but given Stephens’ quality she will be a difficult opponent to beat. Expect a hard-fought three-setter with Collins edging past her compatriot.
