Petkovic Downs Cristian For Another Quarterfinal

Andrea Petkovic breezed into yet another WTA quarterfinal after beating Jaqueline Cristian 6-4 6-3 and stopped the Romanian’s bid for a maiden title on home soil.

Petkovic has now won nine of her last 11 matches post-Wimbledon. She finished runner-up to Elena Gabriela Ruse in Hamburg, and reached the semifinals in Belgrade a week ago. And at 33, Petkovic is not winding down just yet despite spending more time than she imagined on the treatment table in recent years.

The German veteran –  who peaked at number nine in the rankings in the past – received a walkover after her first-round opponent Alexandra Dulgheru, also a Romanian retired midway through the second set. And she had a tough time subduing Cristian whose first serve had deserted her at the most important moments in the match.

Petkovic needed to save five breakpoints in the second set when she served for the match.

Cristian landed just 54% of first serves and was broken four times (three in the second set). Petkovic was also feeding off the second serve where she 13 out of 28 return points.

Mendez Reaches Quarterfinal on WTA Debut

At 22 years of age, Seone Mendez has made it a debut to remember on Cluj-Napoca. The Australian won two qualifying matches – beating Isabella Shinikova and Irina Fetecau to reach the main draw for the first time.

Menedez plies her trade predominantly on the ITF circuit where she has won 11 titles – all coming on clay. And after defeating former World No. 97 Jana Fett for her first-ever win on the WTA tour, she benefitted from Lesia Tsurenko’s retirement in the Round of 16.

The qualifier will now have an opportunity of a lifetime when she takes on a player almost 11 years her senior. Mendez has not been ranked higher than World No. 264, but she is guaranteed a new career-high ranking courtesy of her exploits this week.

Can she produce the upset in a tournament where the top seeds have been falling like flies?

Petkovic v Mendez Prediction and Tip

Petkovic is the more experienced player and enters this contest on the back of some very impressive results. Considering that the German was on the verge of calling it quits less than a year ago, this has been a stirring comeback from the former World No. 9. Expect her to move past the Aussie qualifier.
