Qualifier Konjih’s Fine Run in San Jose

Konjuh, who is now close to her highest ever world ranking, was made to qualify for the main draw in San Jose.

But having done so, she has made the most of her opportunity by reaching the quarter-final, beginning with a battling three set win over Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic, the world number 52.

That earned the Croat a second-round tie against the out-of-form number five seed, Alison Riske of the United States, and it was Konjuh who was the dominant player at the start of the match, breaking Riske twice in a first set which she won for the loss of just one game, and which took just 27 minutes to complete..

She them broke Riske again early in the second set and that proved to be enough. The American had two break point opportunities, could not take either of them, and Konjuh was able to seal the win relatively comfortably.

Zhang Upsets Local Favourite Keys

Zhang, who, after a sustained poor run of form, reached the final in Nottingham before losing to Johanna Konta, began her campaign In San Jose with a comfortable win over Konta’s compatriot, Emma Raducanu, the British teenager who created a stir at Wimbledon this year.

That earned her second-round draw against Madison Keys, the world number 26 and the third seed, with Zhang starting the match as the clear underdog.

It was the American who dropped her serve first, but serving for the set and holding two set points, Zhang allowed Keys back into the match. However, then Keys was broken again next game and this time Zhang was able to serve out.

Keys seemed to have found her way back into the match when she broke the Chinese woman early in the second set. However, she squandered her advantage by dropping her own serve twice, giving Zhang the chance to serve for the match.

Facing match point, Keys saved it and then broke Zhang to take the set to a tie-break. Keys faced two more match points, saved them both, but Zhang would not be denied, and she finally took her fourth opportunity to seal the win.
