Danielle Collins v Elena Rybakina Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Collins Survives Stephens

Danielle Collins is on a roll here in San Jose, having beaten the likes of Shelby Rogers and Sloane Stephens to reach her second consecutive quarterfinal on the WTA Tour. The 27-year-old American needed three sets to beat the 2017 US Open but nonetheless, it was a job well done.

Collins, who is the current world number 36, arrived in San Jose on the back of her maiden singles title – a feat she achieved in the Palermo Open after beating Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the final.

In the preceding tournament of WTA Budapest, she was a semifinalist while in Hamburg before that, she made it to the quarters. Collins has clearly gotten better with time on the tour and now that she is playing on hard courts – a surface where she has generally fared well – she will fancy her chances even more.

Earlier in the year, Collins had reached the quarters in Yarra Valley Classic and Adelaide International, along with reaching the semis in the Phillip Island Trophy.

Rybakina Looking Confident

World No. 20 Elena Rybakina is in fine form at the moment. Coming fresh off a fourth-place finish in the Tokyo Olympics (missing out on the bronze after a three-set loss to Elina Svitolina), the second-seeded Kazakh started her run in San Jose with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Claire Liu in the second round.

Rybakina has been fairly consistent on the WTA Tour, at least in the second half of the season. Following a bleak start where she fell in the early rounds, the 2020 WTA Dubai runner-up finally found her rhythm in the French Open. In Paris, she reached the quarterfinal (beating Serena Williams en route).

Thereafter, Rybakina made it to the semis in Nottingham and the fourth-round in Wimbledon which she followed with that great run in Tokyo.

There is no doubt that Rybakina is a formidable opponent – after all, she made it to five singles finals on the tour last year. But then again, Collins is just as daunting too.

Collins v Rybakina Prediction and Tip

This is an evenly matched affair that can very well go either way. Collins, however, has the home advantage and will start as the favourite on account of that.
