Denis Shapovalov v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head
The players have met five times, with Shapovalov leading 4-1. Tiafoe’s only win came at the 2018 Delray Beach tournament three years ago. Their most recent meeting was on the grass courts of Queens’ Club in London earlier this year, which was won by Shapovalov.

It was at the Canadian Masters 1000 in 2017 that Denis Shapovalov stormed into the limelight with victories over Juan Martin del Potro and Rafael Nadal before losing in the semi-finals to ultimate champion Alexander Zverev.
Shapovalov has had an overall good season across the hard court, clay and grass season. He looked good at the ATP Cup Down Under, made the semi-finals on the hard courts in Dubai, pushed Nadal to have match point in Rome on clay, and was a finalist on the Geneva clay before pulling out of the French Open with shoulder issues.
The grass swing went well for Shapovalov as he was a quarterfinalist in Stuttgart and a semifinalist at Queen’s, and had a good run at Wimbledon before losing a hard-fought semifinal against world number one and eventual champion Novak Djokovic.
Back at number ten in the world, and preparing himself for the US Open series ahead, the Next Gen Canadian pulled out of the Tokyo Olympics after a surprise opening match loss on the Swiss Open clay to unheralded Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic.
Seeded fifth here in Toronto, Shapovalov will be hoping for a good run ahead of the US Open as well as continuing his bid for a year-end spot at the ATP Tour Finals in Turin.

Tiafoe In Search Of Consistency
Inconsistency has been a cause of concern for Frances Tiafoe. Following the successes of 2018 and 2019, Tiafoe has experienced a dip in form, but each time disappointments begin to mount, he pulls off a stroke of brilliance to make his presence felt.
After a none too impressive first half of the year, Tiafoe pulled off a shock win on the opening day of Wimbledon over Roland Garros finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas. One did not see that coming , given the form Tsitsipas had been in. It was not a hard-fought win, but instead a straight sets rout. The American thereafter made it to the third round at Wimbledon before a loss at the hands of Russian Karen Khachanov.
While Tsitsipas avenged the Wimbledon loss to Tiafoe at the Tokyo Olympics, it was another disappointing showing for the American losing to rising compatriot Jason Brooksby at the Citi Open in Washington DC last week.
Failing to make through the qualifiers here in Toronto, Tiafoe made the draw as a lucky loser when Sebastian Korda withdrew with a back strain. Tiafoe put up a stellar display in the opener against Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka for a straight sets win setting himself up for a second round against Shapovalov.
Shapovalov v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip
This is a clash between two players that bring plenty of excitement and flair with their game. Neither has however been as consistent as they would have liked in their short stints on the tour. Expect a well contested match with the Canadian prevailing in two tight sets.
