Pegula Stages Another Remarkable Comeback

Outplayed in the first set, Jessica Pegula was on the brink of elimination as Ons Jabeur served for a place in the Canadian Open semifinal at 1-6, 4-5. But a determined Pegula refused to give up, breaking Jabeur without facing a match point and then going on to win the set in the tiebreak to force the decider.

Once into the third set, Jabeur ran out of steam as the World No. 30 raced to a remarkable 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 win in an hour and 30 minutes. The victory was Pegula’s fourth consecutive three-set win in the tournament and a third time when she wiped off a first-set deficit.

The 27-year-old had begun the tournament with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win over Annett Kontaveit in the first round and then knocked out the 10th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 32. On Thursday, she was involved in another epic, against compatriot and newly crowned Silicon Valley Classic champion Danielle Collins, winning the Round of 16 contest 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

Friday’s win improved Pegula to 28-14 in the main draws this year, taking her into a second semifinal of the season. The Australian Open quarterfinalist had made it to the final four in Doha, as a  well, but hasn’t played a final this season.

Giorgi Takes Out Another Seed

Camila Giorgi continued her stunning run in Montreal, eliminating the 15th seed Cori Gauff in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The Italian got the only break of serve in the first set, but both traded three breaks in a closely contested second, before Giorgi took control of the tiebreak and sealed a place in the semifinal with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) victory.

The win was Giorgi’s third against a seeded player in the tournament. She defeated the ninth seed Elise Mertens 6-3, 7-5 in the first round and the seventh seed Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16 on Thursday.

A quarterfinalist at the Tokyo Games, the 29-year-old also won her second round match in straight sets, defeating World No. 38 Nadia Podoroska 6-2, 6-4.

This will be the second time this year that the World No. 71 will feature in the semifinals. The two-time WTA winner had made it that far in Eastbourne, but was forced to retire with an injury during her semifinal clash against Kontaveit.

Pegula v Giorgi Prediction and Tip

Pegula hasn’t won a match in straight sets this week, while Giorgi is yet to drop a set. So it calls for an interesting semifinal. While Pegula is the higher-ranked player, Giorgi has been very dominant of late and could well be calling the shots on Saturday.
