Belinda Bencic v Marketa Vondrousova Head to Head

It’s 1-1 from their previous two meetings. Vondrousova won in Miami earlier this year, while Bencic got her revenge in the Olympic final, winning the gold after a three-hour battle. both their previous matches were three set affairs.

Bencic Will Look to Build on Olympic Success

Having won the women’s singles gold and the doubles silver at the Tokyo Games, Bencic heads for her fifth Cincinnati Open with confidence sky high. It’s only once that the Swiss got past the first round in Cincinnati though, reaching the third round in 2015, before having to retire from the tournament.

But things could be a lot different this year for the World No. 11 who will be playing for the first time since the greatest accomplishment in her professional career. Bencic kicked off her Olympics campaign with straight sets wins over Jessica Pegula and Misaki Doi, but then had to deal with four consecutive three-setters on her way to earning glory for Switzerland.

She beat both the French Open finalists, champion Barbora Krejcikova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Round of 16 and the quarterfinals respectively and then knocked out Elena Rybakina and Vondrousova in the semifinals and final respectively.

Overall, the 24-year-old is 23-14 this season and has featured in two WTA finals, finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek in Adelaide and to qualifier Liudmila Samsonova in Berlin.

Vondrousova Aiming for Tokyo Revenge

The Olympic silver medalist hasn’t been in poor form either. The left-handed Czech outplayed home favourite Naomi Osaka and bronze medallist Elina Svitolina en route the final in Tokyo, but missed out on gold despite making a heroic comeback attempt in the final. She eventually lost 5-7, 6-2, 3-6 to Bencic.

The 2019 French Open runner-up has a solid record on both clay and hard courts. She was a semifinalist at the Yarra Valley Classic earlier this year and made it to the fourth rounds of the Australian, French and Miami Opens.

She would be a touch disappointed not to have featured in more quarterfinals this year, but a 19-13 record is an indication that she isn’t someone who gets eliminated easily early in a tournament.

The 22-year-old, ranked 42nd in the world, is yet to win a match in Cincinnati after being knocked out in the first round by Ash Barty in 2018 and by Laura Siegemund in 2020.
