Ashleigh Barty v Angelique Kerber Head to Head

The two players have met five times on the tour. Barty leads 3-2 last beating her in the semifinal at SW19 in July. Barty won that match 6-3, 7-6(3).

Kerber’s last win over the Australian came in the 2018 WTA Sydney final in straight sets.

Barty Storms Past Krejcikova

Top seed Ashleigh Barty continues to enjoy a flawless campaign in the Western & Southern Open. In the quarterfinal, she met the reigning French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova and knocked her out with 6-2, 6-4. Early in the second set, the 25-year-old lost her service but she fought back just as quickly to win the match.

Barty was the superior player in that affair with the Czech with seven aces and an impressive first-service win rate of 84%.

The current world number one is yet to drop a set in Cincinnati having previously beaten the likes of Victoria Azarenka and Heather Watson. With her current run, she has also extended her winning streak to 10 matches on the WTA Tour.

This is the second time in her career that Barty has reached the semifinal in this tournament. Given the stellar year she has had, it is definitely not surprising – the Aussie won a handful of big titles at the Yarra Valley Classic, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open, and Wimbledon.

Kerber Gets a Walkover against Kvitova

Angelique Kerber looks all set to compete in her third consecutive semifinal on the WTA Tour. And in all fairness, she looks primed to possibly go the distance in Cincinnati.

In the quarterfinal, she faced a familiar opponent in Petra Kvitova and took a lead with 6-4, 3-3 before the former World No. 2 retired from the match due to a stomach illness. As a result, Kerber breezed into the semis.

The 33-year-old German has been fairly impressive in the competition so far, defeating some formidable players like Maria Sakkari, Elina Svitolina, and Jelena Ostapenko. Following the bleak start she had to the 2021 season, it is a good sign to see the three-time Grand Slam champion find her rhythm in the American swing.

Her resurgence started in WTA Bad Homburg where she won her first singles title in almost three years. Kerber built on it further with an appearance in the semifinal in Wimbledon and now, a similar performance in the WTA Cincinnati.

Barty v Kerber Prediction and Tip

Barty is in form and by all means, she will start as the odds-on favourite. However, Kerber has a slightly superior pedigree and given her overall form and experience, she can reach the final just as well.

It will be an interesting game but for me, Kerber makes for a better choice because this kind of a run from her has been long overdue.
