Anett Kontaveit v Caroline Garcia Head to Head

It’s 2-2 from their previous four meetings.

Garcia won the first of those matchups in Luxembourg in 2016, while the Estonian won the next two in Stuttgart and Rome in 2019 and 2020 respectively. The Frenchwoman won the last of tehir battles at Roland Garros last year. Interestingly, both of Garcia’s wins have come in three sets, while Kontaveit has won both in straight sets.

Kontaveit Overcomes Poor Start to Rout Davis

World No. 30 Annett Kontaveit overcame a terrible start to rout local hope Lauren Davis in the first round of the tournament on Monday.

Broken thrice in the first set, Kontaveit made a resounding comeback to double bagel Davis in the next two sets for a 1-6, 6-0, 6-0 win in just an hour and 35 minutes.

The second seed served 78% first serve points and converted six of eight break points while saved four of seven in the match.

The win was the 25-year-old’s 20th this season and it also ended a five-match losing streak which began with her defeat to Jelena Ostapenko in the Eastbourne final. Since then, Kontaveit had lost her opening round matches at Wimbledon, Olympics, Montreal and Cincinnati.

Also a finalist at the Grampians Trophy at the start of the season, Kontaveit has more or less had a decent season so far, barring the five defeats leading up to Cleveland. Having arrested the slide, the attacking player will now be hoping to build a winning momentum ahead of the U.S. Open, where she reached the fourth round last season.

Garcia Hands Harrison a Heavy Defeat

Garcia began her campaign in style, defeating America’s Catherine Harrison in just 62 minutes.

The World No. 61 was broken in the very first game of the match, but that was her only blemish in the first set as she won the next six games to take the set.

Both players broke each other to start the second, but once again it was Garcia who controlled the proceedings breaking the American two more times for a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

A semifinalist in Laussane and a quarterfinalist in Parma, Garcia has not been able to win two consecutive matches in her previous four tournaments. She was beaten in the first round at the Olympics, the second round in San Jose, the first round in Montreal and the second round in Cincinnati (having qualified for both the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati tournaments).

A seven time champion on the tour, Garcia hasn’t featured in a final since 2019. She will be aiming to reach her third quarterfinal of the season on Wednesday.
