Jan-Lennard Struff v Ilya Ivashka Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, and Struff has won on both occasions. The German won their Davis Cup match on an indoor hard court last year, and also beat Ivashka in the semi-finals in Munich on clay in May.

Both victories were in straight sets.

Struff Ends Losing Sequence

Since reaching the second round in Halle, Struff had been on a terrible run, losing in the opening round of all the ATP events he had entered, including Wimbledon, and the Masters’ events in Toronto and Cincinnati.

He did, at least, win his first round match at the Olympics, but his challenge was then snuffed out by Novak Djokovic.

It would, therefore, have come as a relief to the German, who was given a first round bye, to have ended that run against the Italian Gianluca Mager, the world number 70.

In the end it proved to be a routine victory, built on the firsts et, where he broke Mager midway through the set, and then once more to consolidate his position.

The second set was almost a carbon copy of the first, with two breaks giving Struff the chance to serve for the match, which he eventually clinched with his fourth match point.

He did not face a single break point against him all match.

Ivashka, Back from the Brink Against Cilic

Having failed to qualify for Cincinnati last week, Ivashka was looking for a better performance in this event.

He begam with a comfortable enough victory over the Italian veteran Andreas Seppi in the first round, but then faced a much sterner test in the form of the number six seed, Marin Cilic, of Croatia.

The match began in scrappy fashion, with both men dropping their serve twice. However, it then settled down until, having to hold serve to stay in the set the man from Belarus was broken once more.

An early break in the second set seemed to put Cilic in complete control and, leading 5 -2, it seemed a matter of time only until he put the match to bed.

But Ivashka found inner resolve, broke back and then broke again, eventually levelling the match and taking it into a third set.

And it was he who proved the stronger down the home stretch. He broke Cilic again midway through the set and held on to it to complete the win.
