Marcos Giron v Pierre-Hugues Herbert Head to Head

Giron and Herbert have never been involved in a head-to-head meeting till date. However, both will take the confidence from impressive, straight-set wins in their previous rounds into their first-ever head-to-head clash, making for a fascinating contest.

Giron Takes Down Delbonis

Coming into the Cincinnati Masters shouldering the emotional baggage from back-to-back underwhelming returns at the Washington Open and the Canadian Open, Giron had to cross over two qualifying hurdles to make the main draw.

To that end, the 65th-ranked American did swell as he made short work of compatriot J.J. Wolf and Dominik Koepfer of Germany to seal his passage to the main draw.

However, Giron’s campaign ended in the first round itself as he went down fighting to Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan. Though the American took the opening set, the Kazakh staged a spirited fightback to clinch the second and pip him in a tiebreak in the decider.

Determined to prove a point at Winston-Salem, the 28-year-old, who is still searching for his maiden Tour title, got past Facundo Bagnis of Argentina in straight sets.

Following the template that took him to a comfortable win in the opening round in his next against another Argentine Federico Delbonis, Giron produced two flawless games of tennis to storm into the last 16.

However, between the American and a place in the quarter-finals stands Pierre-Hugues Herbert, a Frenchman he has never played before.

While taking the momentum from two back-to-back wins in the previous rounds, Giron will also be wary of the challenge that Herbert is likely to pose in his bid to go deep in the tournament.

Herbert Routed Coria

In what is his first Tour event since finishing on the losing side of an epic first-round clash at this year’s Wimbledon Championships against veteran Spaniard Pablo Andujar, Herbert also had to clear the qualifiers to reach the main draw at Winston-Salem.

And, the Frenchman didn’t disappoint his fans, taking down Eduardo Nava of the US in his opening qualifier and Wu Tung-lin of Taiwan in his next to set up a first-round meeting with Federico Coria of Argentina.

Determined to not let his good work in the qualifiers go to waste, Herbert, currently ranked just outside the Top-100 in singles, hit the ground running against the Argentine and before his opponent could have realized what hit him, the Frenchman had the opening set in his kitty.

Wary not to take a backward step and surge ahead with the momentum from the first set, the 30-year-old Frenchman imposed himself even more on his rival in the second to close out a facile win.

However, he is likely to face a tougher battle for a place in the quarter-finals as Giron has exuded confidence and menacing form in the tournament so far and will pose a daunting challenge for the Frenchman in the last-16 clash.

Giron v Herbert Prediction and Tip

While Giron and Herbert have never played each other before, the American, on current form and enjoying strong home support, should start as a slight favorite in this last-16 tie.
