For a player who is a former world number one to have slipped so badly in performances since 2020 would have been surprising but equally stunning has been Pliskova’s return to form.

All said and done though, for Pliskova to enter this tournament ranked fourth in the world has been a huge turnaround and one she would love to carry on in a competition where she had made the final in 2016.

McNally Made Round Tw0 at Cleveland
Featuring at Cleveland Open, the 19-year-old McNally won her opener against Anna Danilina before falling to Daria Kasatkina in the second.
That defeat didn’t come without a fight though with McNally having taken the first set before falling in the next two. It was one of those odd performances McNally has dished out this season, in the middle of a slump which has seen her fall to 134th in the world.
Her best result this season, for instance, came at Nottingham where she made the third round, following another third round appearance in Charleston and a quarterfinal at the Guadalajara Open.
However, for her to now come up against the world number four, and an in-form world number four at that, would be a different kettle of fish to that of what she has seen so far in her career.
Can she put up the kind of fight she did against Kasatkina? Seems unlikely.
