Overcoming a sluggish start to the match, 2020 runnerup Azarenka sent Tereza Martincova out in the first round of this year’s competition in straight sets.
Azarenka needed an hour and 12 minutes to overcome Martincova, winning 6-4, 6-0 to seal her second round berth.
It was Martincova who drew first blood when she broke Azarenka in her very first service game of the match, and very soon was serving for a 5-2 lead in the opening set. Azarenka retaliated in fine style after that as she went on a games-winning spree, not allowing her opponent to win a single game post that.
Azarenka broke Martincova five times in a row to come through with ease.
This victory follows an otherwise middling set of results for Azarenka, who has won three successive matches in only two tournaments since the hard court swing ended in March earlier this year.
She now has a good chance of easing into the third.

Paolini Skips Past Shvedova
It’s been a strange sort of a season for Paolini, who has struggled to get going at times but at the same time has won her maiden WTA title at Bol earlier this year.
That result, however, came on clay and while she was an overwhelming favourite to take on Yaroslava Shvedova in her opening round match here, there would have been some nerves playing on hard court surfaces.
That Paolini came through in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and seven minutes was the kind of result she would have wanted coming into an encounter as difficult as the next one.
Paolini was a break up early, lost her serve next before breaking Shvedova back to wrap up the opening set. In the second, the first six games were all breaks of serves and it was only when Paolini finally managed to hold on to her service in the eighth game and broke her opponent in the ninth that things turned around for her.
Can she test out the Belarusian number two in this one?

While Paolini has done her bit this season, expecting her to test Azarenka on hard court will be too much to expect. A straight-set win for Azarenka can be expected.
