Krejcikova Crushes Sharma Hopes

Krejcikova is in the kind of form, you give her an inch and she will browbeat you into submission. And that’s exactly what happened in her opening round match against Aussie qualifier Astra Sharma, who started off rather slowly.

And that’s all the Czech player needed to get going.

She broke Sharma thrice in the first set, losing just two points off her own serve and three off her opponent’s serve to run away with the set in a mere 21 minutes. The second set was more evenly fought but even that came after Krejcikova had broken Sharma in the very first game.

The French Open winner had seven more break-points she frittered away but then held on to her own serve in the 10th game to clinch a 6-0, 6-4 win in an hour and 15 minutes.

Interestingly, Krejcikova now faces a second successive opponent ranked outside the top 100.

McHale Makes Full Use of Easy Opener

It has been a totally forgettable season for McHale but sometimes it’s that small piece of fortune that is all you need to get going. And McHale seems to have gotten that.

Coming into this tournament having won just one main draw match the entire season, McHale was on a three-match losing streak too, falling in the qualifiers at Montreal and Cincinnati and then losing the first round in Cleveland Open.

She wouldn’t have expected too much here at US Open, a competition at which she has won just two main draw matches since 2014.

The luck of the draw helped. Pitted to take on wild-card entrant and 337th-ranked Emma Navarro, McHale registered a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win over her opponent to seal her place in the second round. It was her first main draw win at Flushing Meadows since 2017.

McHale will have her hands full against Krejcikova now though.

Krejcikova v McHale Prediction and Tip

This should be another easy encounter for Krejcikova who can be expected to be in imperious sort of form in these early rounds. Expect Krejcikova to win in straight sets.
