Aslan Karatsev v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

Karatsev and Thompson haven’t played each other before. However, both posted contrasting wins in their first-round matches at the US Open and are all set to produce a knife-edged second-round encounter in their first-ever head-to-head clash.

Karatsev Battles Past Munar

Taking the gains from his sensational run to the semifinals as a qualifier at this year’s Australian Open, Karatsev continued his surge up the tennis charts, lifting his maiden Tour title in Dubai.

He followed up his success with a strong clay court season, finishing runner-up at the Serbia Open and in the last 16 at Madrid Open and the Italian Open.

However, his clay court form didn’t translate into more Grand Slam success as he lost in the second round at Roland-Garros. His first brush with All England didn’t go well either as he crashed out in the opening round at this year’s Wimbledon Championships after losing to veteran Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

Coming into the US Open on the back of two straight opening-round losses at the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters, the 25th-ranked Russian did not have confidence and belief surging in his veins as he took on Spaniard Jaume Munar in the first round.

However, Karatsev started on a bright note and his persistence was rewarded with a break of serve and a win in the first set. Licking his wounds from the opening set defeat, the Spaniard came out all guns blazing and blitzed the Russian in the second to win it at a canter.

Showing tenacity and spunk of the kind that took him to the last four at Melbourne Park, Karatsev stormed back to win the next two sets and set up a second-round meeting with Australian Jordan Thompson.

Against the Aussie, the 27-year-old Russian should expect another tough outing and has to be at his best to come out on the winning side.

Thompson Outlasts Mager

Reaching two quarter-finals and a semifinal in the North American hard-court leg and coming into the US Open with a third-round finish at Winston-Salem, Thompson drew Italian Gianluca Mager in the first round.

Currently placed at 59th in singles rankings, the Australian fell back in the early exchanges and it wasn’t long before he found himself trailing by a set. However, Thompson lifted his game and was duly rewarded as the next two sets fell into his kitty.

Not one to take a backward step, the Italian outclassed the Aussie in the fourth to take the match to a decider. With the momentum with him, Mager made a good feast of things in the final set, taking it to a tiebreak.

However, the match eventually titled Thompson’s way after he pipped the Italian in the tiebreak.

But the Australian has a big hurdle to cross in the form of Karatsev if he has to reach the third round on Thursday.

Karatsev v Thompson Prediction and Tip

With no head-to-head history behind them, it will all boil down to who among Karatsev and Thompson shows up better and more determined on match day. However, the Russian, with the skills that he has at his disposal, should start as a slight favorite in this second-round clash.
