Petra Martic v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head
Martic leads Tomljanovic 2-0 although, it’s been more than a decade since the two ladies last met.

Former World No. 14 Petra Martic has had a pretty disappointing season in 2021 and now seeks some reprieve at the Flushing Meadows.
With a win-loss tally of 13-17, Martic has picked up just one win in her last four tournaments. In the US Open tune-up events in Montreal and Cincinnati, the 30-year-old Croat was beaten in the first round respectively by Daria Kasatkina and Paula Badosa.
In San Jose, Martic made it to round two before succumbing to Magda Linette.
Most of her current season is marked with such uneventful performances, except for that two-week spell in May when she reached the semis in the Italian Open and quarterfinal in WTA Parma.
As for her ongoing run at the Flushing Meadows, she started her journey with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Dalma Galfi. Martic needed just an hour and 18 minutes to dispatch the Hungarian qualifier, dishing out nine aces and 19 winners in the process.

Tomljanovic Starts Strong
Ajla Tomljanovic has never made it past the second round here in the US Open but considering Martic’s recent struggles and inconsistencies, she has a chance to record a new personal feat.
She is definitely off to a good start here as she knocked out Katie Volynets 6-3, 6-1 in just a little over an hour. With this win, she has also registered her best result yet in the American swing.
Even though the 28-year-old has had a season quite similar to that of Martic’s, she has looked slightly better on the whole. The Aussie was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon, in addition to reaching the second round at the Italian Open and French Open, and third-round at Volvo Car Open.
Martic v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip
Like for like, Martic may prove to be the better player among the two given her slightly superior pedigree and ranking. But as things stand, Tomljanovic is more than equipped to deliver the upset and move into the third round.
In other words, this match can very well go either way but has the makings of being a three-setter.
