Shelby Rogers v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

Rogers and Cirstea have met only once before this. That meeting came over five years ago on the clay-courts of Rio De Janeiro. The American won in straight sets.

Rogers Stops Compatriot Brengle

A match that would divide the crowd, it was Shelby Rogers who proved to be a step ahead of fellow countrywoman Madison Brengle on Tuesday. Rogers won 6-4 6-0 in a rematch from last year’s third-round showdown and consequently extends her winning streak over Brengle to four matches.

The 28-year-old Rogers outhit Brengle from the back of the court, firing 13 winners to her compatriot’s two. However, she was slow off the blocks, getting broken to love in the opening game. She did manage to recover, and after both players exchanged another pair of breaks, it was Brengle who blinked against in the tenth game to cede the set.

In the second stanza, Rogers completely dominated proceedings. She lost a combined one point behind both serves as Brengle’s game went into the mud. The World No. 43 improves her record at her home Slam to 11-7 and is now 21-19 for the season.

Cirstea Shocks 29th Seed Kudermetova

In one of the biggest upsets on day two, Sorana Cirstea knocked out the much-fancied Veronika Kudermetova in three sets, winning 7-6 3-6 6-0 in two hours and two minutes.

Cirstea has enjoyed a career resurgence at the age of 31, winning her second career title in Istanbul – almost 13 years on from her maiden success in Tashkent.

Lately, however, the Romanian was on a dwindling run of form. With one win in five matches, it appeared as though she had switched off for the last quarter of the season. Moreover, drawing the 29th-seeded Kudermetova in the first round, her chances of making out of that section of the draw appeared non-existent.

But Cirstea matched Kudermetova, not in terms of power but numbers. Where she excelled, was her ability to smother her opponent with her relentless baseline game and repel danger by returning with interest. Overall she fired 31 winners, one more than the opponent. She also had fewer unforced errors (11 to 20).

A jittered Kudermetova served well below her usual best as she was broken four times, and did not win a single game in the final set rout.

Rogers v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

Rogers looked excellent especially in that second set in beating her compatriot. However, this second-round match is right on the edge and the odds seem to suggest that. We are looking at the games market in this one.
