The World No. 25  saved two match points and fought back from two sets down to  reach the third round on his U.S. Open debut.

Outplayed in the first two sets, the Russian edged out the Aussie in the third and then saved two match points in the fourth set tie-break, before running away with the match in the fifth.

Karatsev, who reached the semifinals on his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open, had lost in the second round of the French Open and the first round of Wimbledon.

Seeded 21, Karatsev struck 57 winners and made 54 unforced errors in the match, compared to Thompson’s 40 winners and 33 unforced errors. The four hour and 44 minutes contest saw a staggering 347 points in all with Karatsev winning 178 of them.

Champion in Dubai and runner-up at the Serbia Open, Karatsev began the competition with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Spain’s Jaume Munar. That match also saw Karatsev making plenty of winners and unforced errors, in all there were 57 of each.

Brooksby Continues to Impress

He is seen as one of America’s brightest young stars and Brooksby is living up to the expectations. On Thursday, the 20-year-old American knocked out compatriot and World No. 42 Taylor Fritz  6-7 (7-9), 7-6(12-10), 7-5, 6-2 to reach the third round of Grand Slam for the first time.

The World No. 99 has been extremely impressive over last one and a half months, finishing runner-up at the ATP 250 in Newport and reaching the semifinals of the ATP 500 in Washington.

He has kept the momentum going at the U.S. Open, beginning with a 7-5, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win over Winston-Salem Open runner-up Mikael Ymer before knocking out the more experience Fritz in the second round.

Both of those matches were four-hour affairs, illustrating Brooksby’s ability to soak in the pressure of long, gruelling matches.

In the second round, Brooksby had 48 unforced errors 26 fewer than Fritz. He also hit 26 winners lesser than Fritz’s 59, but ended up with five more total points than Fritz’s 159.

Talking of break points, he converted 11 of 20 against Ymer and 5 of 19 against Fritz.

Karatsev v Brooksby Prediction and Tip

Both will be ready for another long battle. Karatsev is the higher ranked, seeded player, but Brooksby has been in brilliant form and can punch above his weight. The Russian will be a slight favourite to win in either four or five sets.
