Ashleigh Barty v Shelby Rogers Head to Head

Barty leads the head-to-head by whopping 5-0 margin. Remarkably, four of their meetings have been contested in 2021. The most recent of those matches came at the Madrid Open where the Australian dropped just three games en route to victory.

Barty Too Strong For Tauson

Much of the pre-match analysis in the second round was centred around Clara Tauson’s frame and energy. And how those two ingredients would give Ashleigh Barty some thinking to do ahead of their match on Thursday.

But Barty, as she admitted in her previous presser, she doesn’t live on past glories. Nor does previous success guarantee future success as she put it. And Instead, she put up another classic to defeat the dangerous Danish teenager 6-1 7-5 in an hour and a half.

The first set was one-way traffic, as Tauson – confined by nerves – had a very troubled time on serve. She served well below average despite her giant frame and power-packed game. Barty created 11 breakpoints and converted two.

In the second set, the 18-year-old improved on so many aspects including breaking Barty’s serve while she served for the match. But the Australian World No. 1 was almost two steps ahead in whatever good work Tauson did. Overall Barty’s racket let off 33 winners and fired 11 aces. Her serve was pinpoint too, winning 80% first-serve points.

Barty will look to reach the second week of the US Open for the third straight year.

Rogers Sees off Cirstea

For the fourth time in seven main draw appearances, Shelby Rogers made it to the third round of the US Open after seeing Romania’s Sorana Cirstea 7-5 6-2.

Following her commanding first-round victory over compatriot Madison Brengle, Rogers secured passage into Saturday’s meeting against Barty without dropping a set.

A tight first set saw both players crack the 70% mark in first-serve points. However, Rogers’ second serve was way ahead by some distance. The American was also perfect on netplay, converting all seven points when she dashed forward. Crucially, it was Rogers’s two service breaks that earned her the opening set.

In the second set, the 28-year-old Rogers was dominant throughout. She faced four breakpoints and nullified them with aplomb. Behind the return, she was aggressive –  winning 15 out of 30 points.

Barty v Rogers Prediction and Tip

Barty has no seeds to play against until the quarterfinals. But she has never reached that stage at the US Open, and given Roger’s giant-killing exploits (a win over Kvitova last year comes to mind), we cannot rule out an upset. However, that jaw-dropping 5-0 head-to-head clearly illustrates this is a bad matchup for the American.
