Djokovic Comes Through Stern Nishikori TestS

World number one Novak Djokovic continues his quest for two unique records, i.e to complete the calendar slam and to break  the three-way tie he is in right now for 20 titles with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

After a relatively straightforward first two rounds, the Serb was up against 2014 US Open finalist Kei Nishikori, against whom he had won the last 16 encounters and one expected much the same this time, given where both players have been with their games.

However, it was a strong start by the Japanese former world number four, as he broke Djokovic early. The Serb broke back and the first set was headed to a tiebreak, which Nishikori won with some very inspired hitting.

The next two sets were a tussle between both players with Djokovic resorting to pulling out an extra gear when needed and despite an exchange of breaks, clinching the sets 6-3 each.

Up two sets to one, the Serb was more in control of the fourth set as he clinched it 6-2 clinically and in turn ended a grueling three and a half hour battle which not only tested him but also evidenced that he will need to up his level to ensure he is able to complete the calendar slam next weekend.

Brooksby Continues Strong Run

It has been an impressive last six weeks for 20-year-old American Jenson Brooksby who was runner- up at the Newport Hall of Fame ATP 250 and reached the semi-finals of the ATP 250 Citi Open in Washington DC last month.

He  kept the momentum going at the U.S. Open, beginning with a four set win over Winston-Salem Open runner-up Mikael Ymer before knocking out the more experienced Taylor Fritz in the second round.

Playing surprise package of the early part of the season Aslan Karatsev from Russia in the third round, Brooksby fought with his back against the wall over on Court 17 as he was down two sets to one, feeling a few niggles as well.

It was an inspired performance thereafter as the American broke the Russian regularly in the fourth and fifth sets to close the match and clinch a well deserved five set win and a spot in the fourth round of Labor Day Monday against none other than 20-time major champion and world number one, Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic v Brooksby Prediction and Tip

Djokovic will be wary of the challenges that come with playing an American on Arthur Ashe Stadium and especially on Labor Day Monday. But, there is too much experience on the Serb’s end and he will start to  be focused on the ultimate prize next week.

Brooksby has been in good touch and can take a set off Djokovic- but no more than that. Expect a smooth Djokovic run here.
