Daniil Medvedev v Felix Auger-Aliassime Head to Head

Their only meeting was at the 2018 Canada Open where Medvedev came back from a set down to prevail in three sets.

World number two Daniil Medvedev began his quest for a maiden grand slam in New York as one of the favorites after Novak Djokovic, and also one of the potential individuals who could come in the way of a calendar slam for the world number one from Serbia.

Medvedev has looked good all through the tournament without dropping a set against Richard Gasquet, Albert Ramos-Vinalos Pablo Andujar or Dan Evans coming into the quarter-finals against little known Dutchman Botic Van De Zandschulp, who was on a fairytale run upsetting both Casper Ruud and Diego Schwartzman.

The Russian hit good form from the get-go wrapping up the opening set 6-3 with one break of serve and then upping the level further putting pressure on the Dutchman in the second to wrap it up 6-0.

A tight opening service game from Medvedev followed and although he held, one could sense a change in his opponent’s body language as he broke Medvedev at 2-2 and continued the smooth serving for a 6-4 win taking the match into the fourth set.

There were some tight moments at the start of the fourth  as both players were serving well and the set was tied at 2-2. Going into the latter stages, Medvedev had match point at 4-5 on the number 117 ranked player’s serve but was unable to close out. Another two match points came along when the Dutchman was serving down 15-40 and the clinical 25-year-old from Russia sensed it and closed the match 7-5 in the fourth.

Daniil Medvedev made a third consecutive US Open semi-final with this win, being a runner-up in 2019 and semi-finalist last year.

Auger-Aliassime Comes Through In Shortened Match

Canadian Next Gen star Felix Auger-Aliassime came into the quarter-finals of the US Open looking much more confident after his epic five set win in the previous rounds against gritty Spaniard veteran Roberto Bautista Agut and then the big four set win against Frances Tiafo on Arthur Ashe Stadium over the holiday weekend.

Playing 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz who was coming off spectacular five set wins, especially the one against Stefanos Tsitsipas, Auger- Aliassime was well aware how capable the young Spaniard was.

The match started on even keel with both players holding serve to 2-2, but then the Canadian upped the level to break Alcaraz to go up 4-2 in the first set. Serving at 5-3 to close the set, Auger-Aliassime was down 0-40 but then needed some strong serving to save three break points and a couple deuces to clinch the first set 6-3.

The second set saw an early Auger- Aliassime break to go up 2-0 and before one knew it, Alcaraz was facing break points to go down another break which would all but shut his chances for the night. The Spaniard did well to hold for 1-2 in the second as he had a quick visit from the trainer in the changeover.

The Canadian held easily for 3-1 and then to the surprise and disappointment of all, Alcaraz withdrew from the match with an adductor injury as Auger- Aliassime made his first even major semi-final.

Medvedev v Auger- Aliassime Prediction and Tip

This makes for an interesting semi-final between two exciting players in good touch. While Auger- Aliassime has exhibited immense flair and power, Medvedev has been clinical.

Expect a well fought match, but at the end of it all, the consistency of Medvedev is hard to match. The Russian to win in four sets.
