The two have never met before.

Zidansek Storms Into the Second Round

The fifth seed needed just 68 minutes to beat Italy’s Cristiana Ferrando in teh first round on Tuesday.

Winning 80% points on the first serve, Zidansek converted five of 16 break points and won 60% of return points to take the contest 6-1, 6-1.

The win improved her season record to 28-16. In what has been a breakthrough year for the Slovenian, she reached her first Grand Slam semifinal, won a first WTA title and broke into the top 50 for the first time in her career.

Runner-up in Bogota, the World No. 34 got her first top 10 win over Bianca Andreescu in the first round of the French Open and then went on to collect four more wins to reach the final four for the first time in the majors. She capped off a terrific clay season, by winning maiden WTA title in Lausanne, defeating Clara Burel in the final.

While she flourishes on clay, Zidansek doesn’t quite have a great record on hard surfaces. She had come into the tournament having won just one match in her three previous hard court tournaments, including the U.S. Open and will be happy to have started off with a win at home. But how far can she go?

Kalinina Ends Errani’s Challenge

World No. 64 Anhelina Kalinina is off to a good start in Slovenia, scoring a straight sets win over Italy’s Sara Errani in the first round on Tuesday.

Both players exchanged two breaks each in the first set to take it to the tiebreak, which was dominated by the Ukrainian, who took a one-set-to-love lead. She dominated the second set with three breaks of serve against one to wrap-up the one-hour-and-54-minute contest 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

The win improved Kalinina to 38-11 this season, which includes four ITF titles and a run to her maiden WTA final. The 24-year-old beat Bernarda Pera and Daniella Collins en route to the final in Budapest but finished runner-up to Yulia Putintseva.

Like Zidansek, Kalinina, too, has a better record on clay than on hard courts and so this second round contest is expected to be an intriguing one.

Zidansek v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

This should be an exciting contest with both players attempting to reach a first tour-level hard court quarterfinal of the season. Expect the fifth seed to advance following a solid showing.
