Elise Mertens v Marketa Vondrousova Head to Head

Mertens leads Vondrousova 2-1, last upsetting her in the 2019 WTA Eastbourne.

Mertens Survives Sasnovich Hiccup

Elise Mertens started as the No. 2 seed in the Luxembourg Open and found herself in a rather demanding match against the Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

The Belgian lost the first set and had to stage a comeback thereafter to take the match 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 in two hours and 15 minutes. While it was not the most clinical performance by World No. 16, it got the job done and she is now through to the quarterfinals.

Looking at the year she has had so far in 2021, it has been quite all right as won the Gippsland Trophy and later, was the finalist in the Istanbul Cup. Since then, she has reached the penultimate rounds in a few WTA events but never quite managed to go the distance (quarterfinal in Madrid, semis in San Jose, and the fourth round in the US Open).

As a doubles player, however, Mertens continues to enjoy tremendous success as the #2 ranked player on the circuit. She won the Australian Open and Wimbledon doubles while most recently, she was the quarterfinalist at the Flushing Meadows.

Vondrousova, Yet to Drop a Set

22-year-old Marketa Vondrousova is off to a good start in the Luxembourg Open as she defeated Alison Van Uytvanck and Jana Fett in straight sets to reach the quarters.

It has been a comfortable journey for the Olympic silver medalist who is currently on the search for her first singles title since the WTA Bienne in 2017. A finalist in the 2019 French Open, Vondrousova’s current season has been quite uneventful and as a result, she has fallen out of the top 20.

Her highlights include reaching the fourth round in the Australian Open, Miami Open, French Open and of course, that brilliant run in the Tokyo Olympics. In the US Open Series, the best she could muster was a quarterfinal feat in WTA Chicago before succumbing to Daria Kasatkina in the second round in the New York slam.

Currently ranked World No. 35, Vondrousova is a formidable left-handed player who on her best day can surpass anyone. But given her form inconsistencies, she is just as likely to lose to top seeds.

Mertens v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

Mertens has the experience and a superior pedigree – she will start as the favourite by the virtue of these. That said, Vondrousova has the skillset needed for the upset but going by her recent form, it may not be that easy to deliver.

Tip: Mertens to win 2-1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
