Emil Ruusuvuori v Benjamin Bonzi Head to Head

Bonzi beat Ruusuvuori in their only meeting at the French Open last year.

Ruusuvuori Was a Semifinalist in 2020

Last year’s semifinalist Emil Ruusuvuori heads to his second Astana Open with hopes of going one better this year.

In 2020, the unseeded Finn had entered the main draw through the qualifiers and then defeated higher-ranked players in Jordan Thompson and Mikhail Kukushkin en route to the semifinals before bowing out with a straight sets defeat to Adrian Mannarino.

Hard courts have always brought the best out of the 22-year-old, who comes to Astana with a 19-17 overall record in 2021, which includes a 17-11 record on hard surfaces.

Ruusuvuori, who made an ATP 1000 Round of 16 debut in Miami earlier this year, reached two semifinals on hard courts last month.

First he reached the final four in Atlanta by knocking out Cam Norrie in the quarterfinals, and then reached the semifinals at the Winston Salem Open. However, he is still looking to reach a first career final.

This week, Ruusuvuori is representing Finland in the Davis Cup tie against India. He won his singles rubber against Ramkumar Ramanathan in straight sets.

Bonzi in Top Form at the Challenger Level

He has played six Challenger finals this season and won five of them. Four of those titles came on hard courts, with the most recent of them coming in Cassis, France this month. Bonzi defeated Lucas Pouille in the final to win the title.

On Sunday, he will be playing a seventh Challenger final, following his win over Arthur Rinderknech in the semifinal in Rennes, France on Saturday.

In the other Challenger finals this year, Bonzi lost to Rinderknech in Istanbul, but won the titles in Potchefstroom, Ostrava, Segovia and Saint-Tropez. Ostrava was the only clay title he won this season.

The Frenchman has struggled at the tour-level though, winning just one of the four matches he has played this year.

The 25-year-old who doesn’t have too much of experience at the senior level, broke into the top 100 for the first time this season and will be hoping to impress in Nur Sultan.

Ruusuvuori v Bonzi Prediction and Tip

Bonzi is in exceptional form at the challenger level, but can he replicate it at the senior level? He will definitely fancy his chances against Ruusuvuori, whom he beat last year, but that was on clay and the Finnish player is a strong hard court player. Expect Bonzi to put up a fight, but Ruusuvuori to advance to the next round.
