Laslo Djere will make his debut in Astana and will be keen to return to winning ways when he takes on Colombia’s Challenger campaigner Daniel Elahi Galan.
Djere is on a terrible run of form coming to Kazakhstan this week. Since making back-to-back semifinals in Hamburg and Gstaad, the Serbian was unable to scale the first round in each of his last three tournaments. That includes a first-round defeat to Denis Kudla at the US Open.
And although he could be forgiven for drawing the in-form Sebastian Korda in Cincinnati, his losses to the likes of Hugo Gaston in Gstaad and Daniel Altmaier in Kitzbuhel raised a few eyebrows.
Djere was the overwhelming favorite in both those matches owing to his superior clay-court prowess, but could not prevent defeat despite taking one-set leads.
The world no.50’s hard-court record for the year is an abysmal 2-7, and he has only managed to win one match indoors in the past two seasons. Can he turn it around on Monday?

Can Galan Master An Upset?
Daniel Elahi Galan, like Djere, plays with distinction on clay. His trophy cabinet is filled with two Challenger titles, both won on the dirt.
But during the course of the 2021 season, the Colombian has become an all-around player who has easily adapted to different surfaces. And strangely enough, he has been very efficient on hard courts. Some of his best wins this season have come on the surface, and none bigger than his three-set upset of world no. 21 Alex De Minaur in Miami.
Galan who is Colombia’s top-ranked male player right now (world ranking of no.110), won his first match at Wimbledon when he defeated fellow South American Federico Coria.
Overall he has won 25 matches this year spanning across levels. His major highlight at tour-level is reaching his second ATP semifinal in Santiago. And at the Challenger tour, he reached the finals in Heilbronn 2, losing to Bernabe Zapata Miralles.
Djere v Galan Prediction and Tip
Djere is the higher-ranked player, but Galan has been the better player outside clay this season. He has beaten the likes of De Minaur, Tommy Paul, and Benjamin Bonzi on the surface which is no easy feat for a clay-court specialist. Taking the upset in this one is worth considering.
