Shuai Zhang v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

The head to head tally between the two ladies is tied evenly at 2-2. Putintseva has won their last two meetings, including the one as recently as the Cincinnati Open just last month with 6-2, 6-0.

Putintseva, Fresh Off a Semifinal Run

26-year-old Yulia Putintseva is heading for Ostrava following a superb run in the Slovenian tournament of WTA Portoroz. The World No. 44 reached the semifinal there after defeating the likes of Katie Boulter and LuciaBronzetti. However, she ultimately succumbed to Jasmine Paolini in three sets.

That marked a positive turnaround in her form, seeing that she had failed to move past the opening rounds in the US Open, Canadian Open, and Cincinnati Open (1W, 3L).

Looking at her season so far, there have been only a handful of tournaments where the 26-year-old has impressed in 2021. Putintseva won the title in WTA Budapest (upsetting Anhelina Kalinina in the final) in addition to reaching the quarterfinal in Charleston, Strasbourg, and San Jose.

Should she win this opening-round bout against Zhang in Ostrava, she will face the top seed Iga Swiatek in round two.

Zhang, Hoping for a Positive Start in Ostrava

32-year-old Shuai Zhang recently won the US Open and Cincinnati Masters women’s doubles titles with Samantha Stosur.

As a prolific doubles player, she obviously has the experience and skill set needed to form – even on the singles circuit. However, what she lacks at the moment is consistency – it is owing to the shaky form that she has not made significant strides in the singles rankings.

Case in point, following that second-round exit in the US Open to Emma Raducanu, Zhang featured in the Luxembourg Open where she was beaten by Marie Bouzkova in the opener.

At the same time, there have been a few notable events where the 49-ranked Chinese player overcame the odds to deliver a stunning performance, particularly in the second half of the season.

Zhang was a finalist in the Nottingham Open where she fell to Johanna Konta in the final. A few weeks later, she reached the semifinal in WTA Palermo and later, the quarterfinal in San Jose and WTA Cleveland.

Zhang v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

Both players have put up a decent show on the road to the Ostrava Open. Zhang has more experience and a superior pedigree but Putintseva has momentum on her side.

Expect a good game of tennis that can very likely go either way.
