Iga Swiatek v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

The two players have never crossed paths before on the WTA Tour.

Putintseva, Fresh Off a Semifinal Run

Yulia Putintseva arrived in Ostrava following one of her better performances on the circuit in the recent few weeks. Playing in WTA Portoroz, the Kazakh reached the semifinal where she fell to Jasmine Paolini in three sets.

Nonetheless, Putintseva has momentum on her side and will look to capitalise on it when she takes on the mighty Swiatek. But going by her start in the competition, it is going to be a tough order to deliver.

In the opener, World No. 49 faced Shuai Zhang and needed a little under three and a half hours to reach round two. Putintseva won the game 5-7, 7-6(7), 6-4, saving a match point in the second set to stay alive in the tournament.

The 26-year-old started the season inside the top 30 but following a lack of proper showing on the tour, she gradually dropped out. Her highlights include reaching the quarterfinal in WTA Charleston, Strasbourg Open, WTA San Jose, and winning the WTA 250 event in Budapest.

Swiatek, Starting with a Bye into Round Two

Iga Swiatek has been awarded the top seed in Ostrava and is starting with a bye into the second round. Her season so far has been absolutely splendid and entails a couple of big titles from the Adelaide International and Italian Open.

With that, she also reached the second week in each of the four Grand Slams with her best run coming in the French Open where she was a quarterfinalist.

On the back of these results, Swiatek has scaled to the No. 6 position in the WTA singles rankings and is currently in contention to compete in the WTA Finals. An aggressive player with a huge serve, the 20-year-old Pole is one of the top favourites to go the distance here in Ostrava.

Her last tournament was at the Flushing Meadows where she fell to the Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic in the fourth round.

Swiatek v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

Swiatek will start as the favourite but it may not be an easy win for her. Putintseva may very well put up a solid fight and make the Pole work hard for the win.
