Ivashka Knocks Out Ymer

Ilya Ivashka reached the second round of the tournament with a straight sets win over Elias Ymer.

The Belarusian, ranked No. 52 in the world, didn’t have much trouble in the first set, breaking his opponent twice, but was given a tough fight in the second, with Ymer breaking him twice. Ivashka, however, had one more break than the Swede as he emerged victorious with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

The 27-year-old, who won his first ATP title in Winston-Salem, last month is 25-13 this year and 13-5 on hard courts.

Ivashka will be looking to reach a fifth quarterfinal on Wednesday. He was a semifinalist in Munich and a quarterfinalist in Marbella and Eastbourne.

Skatov Edges Out Seppi

Kazakhstan’s Timofey Skatov stunned veteran Andreas Seppi in the first round of the tournament to register his first main draw victory.

Last year, the 20-year-old was knocked out in the first round of the tournament in his only ATP min draw appearance.

The World No. 280 saved four set points on his serve at 4-5 in the first set to eventually take the set in the tiebreak. His advantage was wiped off by Seppi in the second though as the Italian came back from 0-3 down to break the Kazakh twice and force the decider.

Skatov dominated the third set, racing to a 5-0 lead before eventually winning the match 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-1.

A former junior No. 1, the Kazakh is a decent clay court player. He has won three ITF titles from five finals, but has never played a final outside of clay courts .

He reached his only Challenger final this year at Almaty, Kazakhstan, finishing runner-up. Most recently, he was in the semifinals in Kyiv, Ukraine, this month, which was also a clay court event.

Against Ivashka, he will be aiming to reach a first tour-level quarterfinal.
