Duckworth Crashes Out Kukushkin

Duckworth came to Nur-Sultan with the fillip of having just won a Challenger event in Istanbul, his first victory at that level for more than 18 months.

That was his 19th title on the junior circuits, although he is still waiting for a breakthrough on the senior tour.

He was chosen to play for Australia at the Olympics, getting to the second round before losing to the eventual silver medallist Karen Khachanov.

Subsequent to that he qualified for Toronto and then got to the third round before losing to the world number two Daniil Medvedev. First round defeats in Winston-Salem and the US Open followed, before that successful trip to Turkey.

In the first round here, he played local wildcard Mikhail Kukushkin, and, after a tight first set that was only decided in his favour by a tie-break, he cruised through the second for the loss of just a single game.

Krajinovic, Beaten Hamburg Finalist

Krajinovic has been in four senior finals and lost all of them, the most recent defeat coming in Hamburg in July, when he lost to the Spaniard Pablo Carreno-Busta,

That was on clay, the surface on which he enjoyed the greatest success when he played on the junior tours.

After that loss in Germany, he stayed in Europe and on clay, reaching the second round in Umag and again in Kitzbuhel. And that meant that he was underprepared for the American hard courts when he eventually got there, some thing that was subsequently reflected in his results.

He lost in three sets to Alex de Minaur in the first round of Cincinnati and then suffered an opening round defeat to Guido Pella at the US Open.

Duckworth v Krajinovic Prediction and Tip

Although Krajinovic is the higher ranked player and seed, he prefers clay and has not had a good recent record away from it. Buoyed by his win in Istanbul, Duckworth may sense the chance of an upset.
