Emil Ruusuvuori v Ilya Ivashka Head to Head

Ruusuvuori and Ivashka have been involved in two career, head-to-head meetings till date, with the latter holding a 2-0 lead. They last met in the semifinal of this year’s Winston-Salem Open, with Ivashka coming through in straight sets.

Ruusuvuori Fights Past Karatsev

Coming into the Astana Open after suffering a disappointing second-round exit at the US Open, Ruusuvuori opened his campaign against unheralded Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi on Wednesday.

The 84th-ranked Finn had taken the opening set by a comfortable 6-2 margin before the Frenchman conceded the tie with an injury. The win, via a walkover, saw him set up a second-round meeting with this year’s Australian Open semifinalist Aslan Karatsev.

While most pre-match estimates hinted at closely-fought tie, the match panned out on expected lines. However, showing a calm head on his young shoulders, Ruusuvuori pipped the Russian in a tricky opening-set tiebreak before winning the second set more comfortably to eventually prevail in straight sets.

However, between the 22-year-old Finn and a place in the semifinals stands young Belarussian Ilya Ivashka. Russuvuori tasted defeat in both his previous head-to-head outings against Ivashka and would be keen to prevent a third, straight loss at the hands of the Belarussian.

Ivashka has taken some big strides in the men’s game this season and Russuvuori has to play at his very best if he is to set the record straight against him.

Ivashka Overcomes Ymer in Astana Opener

Within a touching distance of breaking into the top-50 in singles, Ivashka entered the Astana draw after recording a decent third-round finish at the US Open.

Though he was expected to go further in the year’s last Grand Slam after lifting his maiden Tour title at the event prior, the Winston-Salem Open, the Belarussian fell to eventual semifinalist Matteo Berrettini in the third round.

Opening his campaign against Elias Ymer of Sweden, Ivashka blitzed the opening set and took the second by an equally comfortable margin to come away with a facile win.

Up against Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan in his next, the young Belarussian produced a flawless display to prevail in straight sets.

However, he is in for a tougher clash against in-form Emil Ruusuvuori in the battle for the last four. Though he won both their previous head-to-head clashes, Ivashka would be wary of a blowback this time.

Ruusuvuori v Ivashka Prediction and Tip

Though Ivashka has his nose in front of Ruusuvuori in terms of ranking superiority and head-to-head record ahead of this quarter-final clash, the Finn would be keen to get even this time.
