Alexander Bublik v Carlos Taberner Head to Head

Bublik and Taberner have no previous history. They will meet for the first time on Friday.

Bublik Fights Back To Defeat Kecmanovic

Alexander Bublik is only playing in his second indoors tournament of 2021, but he proved his penchant for the surface with a comeback win over the inconsistent Miomir Kecmanovic.

Bublik, a finalist in Singapore, has had a rough time of late being unable to string back-to-back wins since the conclusion of the grass-court season in July. He failed to scale the second round at six hard-court tournaments including the US Open where he suffered a shock defeat to Jack Sock.

But on his first outing on home soil, the second-seeded Kazakh rallied from behind to win 2-6 6-3 7-5. Regardless of Bublik’s struggles to get over the line, this is certainly an improvement from last season’s straight-sets defeat in the first round at this very tournament.

Bublik’s resilience was on display after falling behind in the first set. Overall, he fired 18 aces to eight double faults, and was aggressive behind the return in which he fared marginally better than Kecmanovic (31 to 28).

Taberner Reaches First Tour-level Quarterfinal

Carlos Taberner reached his first ATP tour quarterfinal with a thrilling comeback win over Egor Gerasimov on Thursday. The match threatened to extend into a fourth hour before Taberner put a stop to proceedings, winning 5-7 7-6 7-5 in three hours and 22 minutes.

The result was a major surprise considering that the Spaniard had only managed one main draw victory on hard-courts this season. And that came in the embryonic stage of the season when he won his first round at the Istanbul Challenger in January.

Taberner did not play a single tournament on hard courts until the US Open where he lost in five sets to Botic van de Zandschulp. Very little was expected from the 24-year-old who until this week had only managed one main draw win on hard-courts at tour level.

But he has defied the odds, first against Berankis, and then against the big-hitting Gerasimov. The Belarusian’s flailing second serve gave the Spaniard plenty of chances to attack. Taberner had great success, winning over 50% of return points on it and converting nine of 13 break points.

Bublik v Taberner Prediction and Tip

Bublik has now made the quarterfinals or better at four hard-court tournaments including indoors. If he plays to his strengths, he is unlikely to encounter any defiance, but the tenacious Spaniard should make this closer than what the odds suggest.

Tip: Bublik to win AND over 19.5 games: 6/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
