Monfils Extends Dominance Over Kohlschreiber

Gael Monfils extended his dominance over Philipp Kohlschreiber, winning a 15th time against the German on Thursday, having lost just twice in their previous 17 duels.

Monfils, who had won the 2009 title in Metz by defeating Kohlschreiber in the final, beat the German again to reach a sixth quarterfinal from six Metz appearances.

Seeded third in the tournament, Monfils was a quarterfinalist in 2004, runner-up in 2005, winner in 2009 and semifinalist in 2012 and 2014.

On Thursday, the Frenchman, who received a first round bye, needed an hour and 33 minutes to beat Kohlschreiber 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. The World No. 20 won 88% points on his first serve, striking eight aces in the match. Both players had six break point chances, with Monfils converting three and saving four.

Thanks to the win, the 35-year-old is now 10-13 in 2021. He had a terrible start to the season, going 3-8 till the Tokyo Olympics, but found some form during the North American swing, reaching the quarterfinals of the Toronto Masters, the Round of 16 in Cincinnati and the third round at the U.S. Open.

He maintained the rhythm in his opening match at the Moselle Open and will now be hoping to reach a fifth semifinal in Metz.

Basilashvili Rallies Past Davidovich Fokina

Nikoloz Basilashvili had a nervy start to his second round contest against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, but he overcame the shaky start to beat the Spaniard and advance to the quarterfinals for the fourth straight year at Metz.

A semifinalist in 2017, the Georgian had made it to the quarterfinals in 2018 and 2019. On Thursday, he returned to the last eight with a 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win in two hours and 58 minutes.

Davidovich Fokina had four match points on Basilashvili’s serve at 4-5 in the final set, but the World No. 36 saved all four of them, before eventually going on to win the match in the tiebreak.

In all, Davidovich Fokina had 14 break points but he could convert just four of them, while Basilashvili had eight opportunities to break the Spaniard and he took two of those chances.

In the first round, Basilashvili had defeated Italy’s Gianluca Mager 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). The 29-year-old has enjoyed a pretty good season, winning two titles in Doha and Munich in addition to reaching two semifinals in Cagliari and Halle.

With Thursday’s win he improved to 27-22 this year and he will be aiming to build on that on Friday.
