Duckworth Knocks Out Defending Champion

Duckworth came into this event full of confidence after winning a Challenger event in Istanbul last week, and he has continued that form in Kazakhstan, beginning with a straight sets over the local wildcard Mikhail Kukushkin and then defeating the number four seed Filip Krajinovic of Serbia.

However, he would have got the greater satisfaction from beating his quarter-final opponent, fellow Australian, Olympic Games team mate, and defending champion John Millman, the world number 48.

Duckworth struck the first blow by breaking Millman in the opening game of the match. Millman had no fewer than six break back opportunities, could not take any of them, and the first set belonged to his opponent.

Again, Millman dropped his opening game of the second time, but this time he hit back to level, only to be immediately broken once more. Millman saved one break point, but could not prevent Duckworth closing out the match next game.

Ivashka Living Up to Dark Horse Billing

Those who tipped Ivashka as a dark horse to win the tournament and add the Astana Open title to the one he won in Winston-Salem last month will have seen little to change their mind this week,.

That was especially the case after he breezed past Elias Ymer of Sweden and Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan in the earlier rounds.

However, his quarter-final opponent, Emil Ruusuvouri of Finland, the world number 84, offered a stiffer challenge, especially after he hit back by going a break down in the first set by responding with two breaks of his own to take the lead.

Ivashka though rallied with a break of his own mid-way through the second set, and, when he was broken in turn, immediately responded by breaking again, going on to level proceedings.

An early break in the third det confirmed that the tide had turned in hs favour, and two more breaks saw him seal the win.

Duckworth v Ivashka Prediction and Tip

Although Duckworth is I a rich vein of form right now, he is playing a man who has been consistently one of the most improved performers on tour in  2021 and has developed a winning habit. It is hard to see beyond Ivashka in this match.

Tip: Ivashka to win: 3/10 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
