Sebastian Korda v Tommy Paul Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before and Korda has won on each occasion. Both meetings were earlier this year, Korda winning on I the indoor hard courts of Delray Beach in three sets and on the clay of Parma in two.

Korda Already Qualified for NextGen Finals

It is a measure of the respective journeys the two men have been on in 2021 that Korda has now overtaken Paul in the world rankings. The 21-year old began the year ranked 116 in the world, but is now knocking on the door after a season in which he has already qualified for the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan in 2021.

He began the year by reaching his first ATP final in Delray Beach, and, although he lost on that occasion to Hubert Hurkasz, he did win his first senior final on the clay of Parma in May, beating Marco Cecchinato in straight sets.

And, at Wimbledon, he matched his best ever performance at a Grand Slam by  reaching the fourth round.

This will be only his fourth tournament since then.

He reached the second round in Washington and Cincinnati and had to pull out of his last match, his opening round tie at the US Open with Nikoloz Basilashvili, with an injury.

Paul Struggling for His Best Form in 2021

By contrast to Korda, Paul has had a mixed year on tour, in which he has struggled to find his best form.

Now 24 years old, he has never fully replicated on the senior tour the form he showed as a junior, where he was a Grand Slam winner at the French Open and a runner-up in both singles and doubles in two other major finals.

Ironically enough, it was in Parma, where he lost to Korda, that he enjoyed his best result of the year, reaching the semi-finals on that occasion.

Since then, it has been a successive series of early defeats, never getting beyond the second round of any tournament.

He was last in action at the US Open, where he lost in the first round to the world number 89, Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain, beaten in four sets.

Korda v Paul Prediction and Tip

Korda appears to have the edge over Paul, having beaten him twice already this year. Provided that he is fully recovered from his injury problems, he should make it a hat-trick in San Diego.
