Giorgi on a Two-Match Losing Streak

A quarterfinal appearance at the Olympics, a maiden WTA 1000 title at the Canadian Open and a return to the top 40 in the world, the last couple of months have been pretty good for the 29-year-old Italian who comes to Chicago with a 23-14 season record.

Giorgi, who did not have a very encouraging start to the season, reaching just one quarterfinal in the first quarter in Lyon, struck form in Eastbourne, reaching the final four after coming through the qualifiers. On the way she knocked out Karolina Pliskova and Aryna Sabalenka but couldn’t continue her semifinal match against Annett Kontaveit and had to retire during the first set.

She beat Pliskova again in the Round of 16 at the Olympics and then again in the final in Montreal to capture what was her third WTA title from nine career finals.

The Italian, who prefers playing on hard and fast surfaces, had previously captured the Linz Open title in 2018 and the Rosmalen Grass Court Championship in 2015. That was her only grass court final, all of the other eight finals have come on hard courts.

The 2018 Wimbledon quarterfinalist is coming into the tournament on the back of two consecutive first-round defeats in Cincinnati and the U.S. Open. She will be looking to change that trend in Chicago on Monday.

Ruse Will Find the Going Tough in Chicago

The 23-year-old was not even in the top 150 when the season began, and she kept slipping further back after she failed to qualify for WTA tournaments and also failed to make deep runs at the ITF tournaments.

However, all that changed during the clay court season as Ruse shot to prominence with two stunning back-to-back runs to WTA finals. First she went on to win her maiden WTA title at the Hamburg Open by beating Andrea Petkovic in the final and then reach a second final a couple of weeks later in Pallermo, but fell to Daniella Collins in the title clash. Collins was one of the players, Ruse had beaten en route the Hamburg title.

As a result of those two solid results, she made massive gains in the rankings and the current World No. 99 will now be hoping to keep improving with more solid performances. However, her game is more suited for clay and seven of her nine ITF final appearances have come on clay. She has won six of those titles. She is yet to win a hard court title, and has a 0-2 record in finals on the surface at the ITF level.

Giorgi v Ruse Prediction and Tip

Having lost in the opening round of the previous two tournaments, Giorgi will look to begin well in Chicago. Expect her to begin with a straight sets win in the first round.
