Wildcard Vandeweghe Back on the Comeback Trail

Vandeweghe now gets wildcards to tournaments in which she once would have been seeded because her career has been derailed by injury in recent years, with a long-standing ankle problem linked to a nervous condition.

However, she has been making something of a comeback in2021 and reached her first semi-finals in three years as a qualifier at the Birmingham Open, That was also the first time she had reached the main draw of a WTA event since July 2019. She then went on to reach the second round of Wimbledon.

Since then, she shas struggled for form and did not win a single match for two months, that run including a first round defeat at the US Open, where she was also a wildcard.

However, she did gain some much needed confidence by entering and reaching the semi-final of a Challenger event in Columbus, Ohio last week, eventually losing to the Chinese woman Xinya Wang.

Linette Has Claimed Some Big Scalps in 2021

Although she has been eclipsed by the recent rise of Iga Świątek, for years Linette carried the flag for Polish women’s tennis, reaching four finals and winning two of them, the most recent of which was the Thailand Open last year just before lockdown.

The start of her season was delayed due to a knee injury, but, in May she reached the semi-finals in Strasbourg, and then at the French Open she claimed the scalp of world number one Ashleigh Barty.

At the same event, with partner Bernarda Pera she reached the semi-finals of the doubles, her best performance in a Grand Slam event.

Linette beat another big name in the form of Elina Svitolina at Wimbledon, but her US Open campaign ended at the first round stage.

Since then, she has played in Ostrava, where she had to qualify before losing to the world number 16 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, in the second round, beaten in three sets.
