Ons Jabeur v Jessica Pegula Head to Head

The two ladies have met just twice on the WTA Tour. Pegula leads 2-0, last beating the Tunisian in the WTA Montreal quarterfinal this season with 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-0.

Jabeur, Looking Confident in Chicago

27-year-old Ons Jabeur started her journey in the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic with a clinical 6-1, 6-0 victory over Su-Wei Hsieh (who had previously ousted Kim Clijsters in the opener). In line with the fabulous season Jabeur has had in 2021, she needed just 45 minutes to carve this win with a single bagel.

Now she meets Pegula – an opponent who has beaten her as recently as August but not before she could upset the likes of Daria Kasatkina and Bianca Andreescu in Montreal.

Since then, Jabeur has been beaten in the third round successively in the Cincinnati Open and US Open, respectively by Petra Kvitova and Elise Mertens. Nonetheless, she managed to become World No. 16 – her career-best singles ranking yet – following some sensational tennis over the course of the year.

The number six seed made it to two singles finals on the tour in 2021, going the distance at the Birmingham Classic to become the first Arab woman to win a WTA trophy. Later, she reached the quarterfinal at Wimbledon after defeating Venus Williams, Garbine Muguruza, and Iga Swiatek.

Clearly, Jabeur is not a player to be taken lightly but then again, neither is Pegula.

Pegula Making Great Strides

Jessica Pegula may not have won a singles title yet in 2021, but that hasn’t stopped her from ascending in the rankings. Currently ranked World No. 24, she most recently boasted of a third-round appearance in the US Open, losing to Belinda Bencic.

Looking at her overall season, Pegula has had her moments often than not with some brilliant tennis and plays. To begin with, she was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open and followed it with a semifinal run in WTA Doha as a qualifier, upsetting Jelena Ostapenko and Karolina Pliskova en route.

The 27-year-old then reached the fourth round in three of the four successive tournaments – notably WTA Dubai, Miami Open, and Italian Open. It is on these kinds of consistent runs that Pegula built a solid year and cemented herself in the top 30.

A semifinalist in the Canadian Open, Pegula is yet to drop a set in Chicago this week. In the opener, she met Magdalena Frech and dispatched her 6-3, 6-0. In the next round, she defeated Andrea Petkovic 6-2, 7-5, to reach round three.

Jabeur v Pegula Prediction and Tip

Both players are in fine form but Jabeur, by the virtue of her superior pedigree and season, will start as the favourite. However, it may not be an easy match for her as Pegula will fancy her chances of making it 3-0 against the Tunisian.

Expect a good game of tennis.
