McNally Lost to Pliskova in US Open Opener

Coming into the US Open on the back of a last-16 loss to Russian Daria Kasatkina in the Cleveland Championships, young McNally launched her campaign at the year’s last Grand Slam against veteran Czech star Karolina Pliskova.

And, the vast experience and big-game smarts of her seasoned opponent proved a little too hot to handle for the rising American as she went down in straight sets to crash out of the tournament.

Bringing her superior skill-sets to bear on young McNally, Pliskova raced to a 6-3 win in the opening set. Wary of taking her foot off the accelerator, the Czech star pressed ahead with the momentum to close 0ut a fairly lopsided win in the end.

McNally will have redemption in her sights as she opens her Indian Wells campaign against unheralded Chinese Saisai Zheng on Wednesday.

Though the American will fancy coming through against an opponent who is still finding her way around in the professional circuit, she would wary of making the rookie mistake of letting complacency settling into her system against a relatively lightweight rival.

Zheng Went Down to Kozyreva in Round 1 of ITF USA 18A

After reaching the second round at this year’s French Open and following it up with a title-run at ITF Portugal 10A, Zheng reached the semifinals of WTA 125 event at Columbus, US.

Though she faltered at her next event, the ITF USA 18A, going down in the opening round to Russian Maria Kozyreva, the emerging Chinese talent did enough to make the draw at the Indian Wells Masters.

Currently ranked inside the top-100 in singles, 27-year-old Zheng will open her Indian Wells campaign against American Caty McNally.

Though she has never been paired against the American on the women’s Tour before, Zheng would hope to rediscover the form that took her to the ITF title in Portugal and a semifinal finish at Columbus in Wednesday’s outing.

McNally v Zheng Prediction and Tip

Superior ranking and better exposure of the senior women’s Tour would give McNally a clear edge going into the opening-round battle on Wednesday. However, Zheng does have a run of results to show that she belongs at the senior level, and will be no pushover against the American.
