World No. 97 Lauren Davis hasn’t been particularly impressive in 2021, barring a handful of tournaments. Consistency hasn’t been her strong suit; if anything, she has dropped some 20 odd places in the rankings since the start of the year.
She has been competing in the American tournaments since August, with her best run coming in the WTA 125 Columbus and Charleston where she reached the quarterfinal and semifinal respectively. In the US Open, she was beaten in round two while in the other events, Davis succumbed in the opening rounds.
The 27-year-old American is seeking her first singles title since the 2017 Auckland Open. The closest she came to winning one this year was in the WTA Nottingham, where she reached the semis and fell to Shuai Zhang.
As for her historical performance in the Indian Wells Open, she has reached the fourth round here a couple of times – the last stint being in 2017. Since then, she hasn’t made it past the second round.

Parrizas Diaz, Working Hard on the Tour
With a win-loss tally of 53-15 and career-best singles ranking of World No. 70, Nuria Parrizas Diaz will be heading into this match full of confidence.
It has been an impressive season for the 30-year-old Spaniard, who started the year outside the top 200. She has picked up five ITF titles over the course of the season, with her most recent one coming in Landisville in August. With that, Diaz has also won a couple of WTA 125K trophies in Bastad and Columbus.
While she boasts an impressive pedigree, Diaz is yet to prove herself on the WTA Tour by taking on the big guns. Case in point, she fell in the qualifiers in the first three majors this season before finally reaching the first round in the US Open (she fell to Varvara Gracheva in the main draw opener).
Nonetheless, she is quite experienced and is in a much better form overall than her American adversary.
Davis v Parrizas Diaz Prediction and Tip
Diaz has a fair bit of momentum on her side and the opening round match against Davis serves as an excellent opportunity for her to post her best WTA results.
