Alejandro Davidovich Fokina v Steve Johnson Head to Head

Fokina and Johnson have been involved in just one head-to-head meeting till date, with the Spaniard holding a 1-0 lead. Their only meeting came in the last 16 of Cologne 2 indoor hard-court event in 2020. Fokina won the tie in straight sets.

Fokina Went Down to Paire in Sofia Opener

Following up on his first-round ouster at the US Open at the hands of unheralded Argentine Marco Trungelliti with a modest last-16 finish at Moselle Open and an opening-round defeat to Frenchman Benoit Paire at Sofia, Fokina’s quest for redemption continues.

Both tactically and in terms of skill, the young Spaniard trailed his seasoned and battle-hardened French rival in the Bulgarian capital and eventually went down in straight sets.

However,  the 22-year-old, who is currently inside the top-50 in singles, has another shot at atonement for all the results that didn’t go right for him as he opens his campaign at the Indian Wells Masters on Thursday.

But between him and a place in the second round stands experienced American Steve Johnson . Though the Spaniard came out on the winning side  the only previous time they went against each other, it would mean little going into a fresh clash.

Having struggled to clear the opening rounds in his recent events, Fokina would be desperately keen to start well in the tournament, but so will the American who has been short of his best in his previous tournaments.

Johnson Fell to Gaio in San Diego First Round

Coming into San Diego on the back of a modest showing at the US Open —  a second-round exit —Johnson had to clear the qualifiers to seal his passage to the main draw.

However, he fell at the qualifying hurdle instead, against Federico Gaio of Italy. The American took the opening set by a handsome margin but lost his way thereafter to eventually go down in three.

He needs to start from scratch again as he opens his campaign at the Indian Wells Masters against fiery, young Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Thursday.

And, he won’t be carrying good memories into the contest as the only time they met before, the American fell to a straight-set loss to the Spaniard.

Could he turn the tables on the Spaniard this time? One suspects it will largely depend on the mindset that he goes into the contest with as anything short of his very best won’t be enough to get the result in his favor.

Fokina v Johnson Prediction and Tip

The head-to-head record does give Fokina a slight edge going into this battle against Johnson.  Being a seasoned pro, the American won’t be an easy nut to crack.
