Mackenzie McDonald v James Duckworth Head to Head

The pair have never played each other once before. This will be the first match between the 26-year old American, and the Australian, who is three years older.

McDonald Hoping to Improve Indian Wells’ Record

McDonald’s record in California is scarcely better than his opponent’s. This is only the third time he has featured in the main draw, and his second round appearance in 2019, the last time the event was held, is the best he has managed to date.

He will be, at least, hope to improve on that after a summer in which he reached his first major ATP final in Washington, eventually losing in three sets to Jannk Sinner.

He suffered a first round defeat in Toronto and then was beaten by Daniil Medvedev in Cincinnati.

At the US Open he produced a first round surprise by knocking out David Goffin, but then came involved in a battle with Kei Nishikori. He fought back from two sets down against the Japanese, only to succumb in the fifth.

He has not played competitively since.

Duckworth Finding Some Late Season Form

Duckworth has been finding some late season form.

At the start of September, he won a Challenger event in Istanbul, his 19th at that level and his first for over a year.

Then he travelled to Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan, and reached his maiden senior ATP final. Defeating both John Millman and Ilya Ivashka along the way, before eventually losing to the South Korean Soon-woo Kwon.

And, last week in Sofia, he reached the semi-finals before going down in straight sets to Jannik Sinner, who went on to lift the trophy.

This though will only be his second appearance in the main draw at Indian Wells – his only previous visit here was in 2015, when he got to the second round.

That, though, remains his best ever performance in a Masters’ event.

McDonald v Duckworth Prediction and Tip

On paper, these two are evenly matched, and both men are looking to improve on poor records in this event. Duckworth is the man in form, whereas McDonald has not  played competitively for a month.

However, fatigue may play its part. McDonald will be well rested whilst Duckworth has done a lot of travelling since. That, and the fact that he is playing on home soil, may just give the American the edge.
